Spooner is the top of the road for us, about an hour and a half north of Eau Claire on Highway 53, a city of about 2,500 that calls itself the Crossroads of the North because 53, 63, 70 and 253 all meet here. It's the largest city in Washburn County, though the county seat is Shell Lake.

Spooner High School on Highway 70 has the track that hosts the Spooner Invitational, the Heart O' North Conference championships and the middle-school invitationals. Track work is a summer-window job, and lanes and exchange zones get measured rather than eyeballed.

A new lot up here goes down on a graded, compacted, drained base, because the base is what decides whether it lasts through the winters this far north.
