Neither of ISD 622's high schools is in Maplewood: North High is in North St. Paul and Tartan is in Oakdale. The high school inside the city is Hill-Murray, a private school on a 40-acre site on Larpenteur Avenue, which runs track and field and tennis and is listed as a Maplewood track venue. Ramsey County's Aldrich Arena on White Bear Avenue is the other institutional sports property here, and an arena's pavement is parking and service rather than playing surface. The surface work is the same trade. Clean it, fill what has opened up, seal it, and it lasts. What's different is everything downstream of the paint gun. Lane lines are set from a measured stagger so that every lane runs the same distance. Exchange zones and acceleration zones have defined lengths and have to be marked in the right colors to be read at speed. Get the layout wrong and you have a facility that looks finished and can't host a meet, which is a problem nobody notices until the day it matters.
