Working in River Falls
UW-River Falls has the track. David Smith Stadium at Ramer Field is a nine-lane 400-meter outdoor track with pole vault, long and triple jump runways and throwing venues around an AstroTurf field, and Ramer Tennis Courts sit just east of it with six outdoor hard courts. Inside, the Knowles Field House has a six-lane 200-meter competition track and five tennis and volleyball courts. River Falls High School on Cemetery Road runs boys' and girls' track and field and tennis, and the district's 2024 referendum covered grounds work and multipurpose athletic space. Track work gets laid out to the measurements rather than by eye, because lanes and exchange zones have to come out where they're supposed to.

What makes track work different
The surface work is the same trade. Clean it, fill what has opened up, seal it, and it lasts. What's different is everything downstream of the paint gun. Lane lines are set from a measured stagger so that every lane runs the same distance. Exchange zones and acceleration zones have defined lengths and have to be marked in the right colors to be read at speed. Get the layout wrong and you have a facility that looks finished and can't host a meet, which is a problem nobody notices until the day it matters.
What Decides the Price in River Falls
These are ranges. Anything at this scale is walked and measured before it is quoted, because condition and layout move the number far more than square footage does.
Restripe only
Existing layout, surface sound
Measured on site
- Lanes, exchange and acceleration zones, numbers
- Layout taken from the existing measured stagger
Crack repair, seal and restripe
The usual maintenance cycle
Measured on site
- Hot crack filling, surface seal, full relay of lines
- The cycle most asphalt tracks want every few years
Courts
Tennis, basketball, pickleball
Measured on site
- Per court, depending on condition and color coating
- Multiple courts on one visit come down per court
Public bodies usually need a bid they can put against a budget line, often a season ahead. Ask in the fall for work the following summer and you'll get a better number and a better slot.
How the Work Goes in River Falls
Track work happens in the summer window between seasons.
Walk it, measure it, write it
Condition survey and a measured check of the existing layout before anything is quoted. If the stagger has drifted from an earlier restripe, that gets found now rather than after the paint is down.
Crack repair
Hot rubber at 400 degrees into anything that has opened up. On a track this matters more than on a lot, because a crack across a running lane is a trip hazard as well as a leak.
Clean and seal
The whole surface, edge to edge. This is the step that buys the years and it is the one that gets deferred, because a faded track still works.
Lay out the lines
Chalked from measurements, checked, then painted. Lanes, exchange and acceleration zones, start lines, and lane numbers.
Hand it back clean
Cured, swept, and ready for the season.

The Lots and Surfaces in River Falls
River Falls is a city of about 17,800 straddling the Pierce and St. Croix county line, on the Kinnickinnic River south of the interstate. It's about 63 miles from Eau Claire, an hour and twenty minutes out I-94 and down Highway 35, and the city puts itself five minutes off the interstate and thirty from downtown St. Paul. Highways 29, 35 and 65 all serve it. The University of Wisconsin-River Falls is here, with about 5,300 students.
Four named parks hold the industrial ground. Mann Valley Corporate Park on the northwest side is the biggest inside the city limits, more than 200 acres zoned for office and light industrial with a single 155-acre lot in it. Sterling Ponds Corporate Park has four lots left over 15 acres, Whitetail Ridge Corporate Park has two lots over 12.5 acres with roughly a dozen businesses and an estimated 400 employees already on it, and the older River Falls Industrial Park has a three-acre lot and an area zoned heavy industrial. The Radio Road interchange, built in 2014, puts all of them straight onto Highway 35.
The rest of the commercial surface is the campus and the hospital. UW-River Falls runs about 5,300 students and opened a science and technology center in 2026, the largest construction project in the university's history. Allina Health's River Falls Area Hospital is on East Division Street, with two more clinics in town. River Falls High School is on Cemetery Road with about 1,100 students, and Chippewa Valley Technical College has a branch campus here. Foley United, Interfacial Solutions and Rush River Brewing are among the businesses the city puts on its own site.

The Pierce County soil survey puts the largest areas of sandy outwash in the valley of the Kinnickinnic, and Waukesha silt loam, a terrace soil laid down as stream terrace and outwash, occurs principally in the township of River Falls. Sand and silt loam don't hold water the same way, and a lot can have both under it.
