Layout first, then paint

Repainting existing lines is the easy half. The half that matters is whether those lines were right in the first place, and on a lot that's been restriped three or four times by different crews, they usually have drifted. Stalls narrow by an inch each time somebody paints beside the old line rather than over it, drive aisles shrink, and eventually a delivery truck can't make the turn. We measure before we paint. Sometimes that means telling you the layout you have fits fewer cars than the layout you could have, which is a conversation worth having before the paint goes down rather than after.

Our house is in the West Hill historic district. Are there rules about the driveway?
Resurfacing or sealing an existing drive is maintenance rather than a visible alteration, and it isn't the kind of thing that normally raises a question. Changing the shape of a drive, its material or its width is a different matter, and the city is the right place to ask before anyone quotes it. The estimate says which side of that line your job is on.
Why does everything cost more per square foot on a small old driveway?
Because it isn't the square footage that costs, it's the edges and the access. A pre-war drive on the West Hill bluff is narrow, often steep, and frequently runs right up against a foundation or a retaining wall, so both sides get cut in by hand rather than sprayed. A wide modern drive with grass on either side takes a fraction of the time for twice the area. We price that in rather than discovering it on the day.

It is priced per stall, and the thing that moves it most is whether the old lines can be followed. A straightforward restripe over a layout that is still visible is the cheap end. A new layout costs more per stall because it has to be measured and set out from scratch. How often does a lot need restriping?
