How long does it take to sealcoat a driveway?
The work on a normal residential driveway is a few hours, and the part that takes a day or two is the cure that has to follow it.
The numbers
- Cleaning and edging usually takes longer than coating does.
- Crack filling adds time in proportion to how many feet of crack there are.
- Cars normally go back on after 24 hours, heavier vehicles after 48.
- Cool, damp or shaded conditions push the cure time out. Cold does it more than anything else.
Where the hours go
Most of a sealcoating day is preparation. The surface gets swept and washed, oil spots get treated, grass gets cut back off the edges, and every crack worth filling gets filled. Only after all of that does any sealer go down, and the coating itself is the quick part.
A drive with a lot of crack work in it takes noticeably longer, because crack filling is measured along the cracks and there is no shortcut through it.
The part you have to plan around
The cure is the number that affects your week. You need somewhere else to park for it, and so does anybody who visits. Turning your wheels while stopped on a curing coat is what leaves the scuff marks people call in about.
The weather moves that number. A warm dry day cures fast. A cool damp one, or a drive under heavy shade, takes longer. The number you are given that day is the one to go by rather than a number off a website.
Commercial lots
A lot is the same material with the same cure, spread over more ground. What changes is that the 24 to 48 hours has to come from somewhere in your operating week, so the hours and the areas you cannot lose are worth naming when you ask for the estimate.
