Working in Rice Lake

Cedar Mall, the South Main Street pads, the hospital and the two campuses are lots where the layout is the job: ADA stalls and access aisles to the federal dimensions, fire lanes, drive aisles a delivery truck can actually use. A restripe on a sealed lot goes on after the sealer cures.

Layout first, then paint

Repainting existing lines is the easy half. The half that matters is whether those lines were right in the first place, and on a lot that's been restriped three or four times by different crews, they usually have drifted. Stalls narrow by an inch each time somebody paints beside the old line rather than over it, drive aisles shrink, and eventually a delivery truck can't make the turn. We measure before we paint. Sometimes that means telling you the layout you have fits fewer cars than the layout you could have, which is a conversation worth having before the paint goes down rather than after.

What Decides the Price in Rice Lake

Priced per stall for straightforward restripes, or as a lump sum where there's layout work, ADA work or a lot of detail.

New layout

Per stall, measured and set out

Measured on site

  • Where the layout has drifted or the use has changed

ADA stall with access aisle

Each

Measured on site

  • Stall, hatched access aisle and symbol
  • Signage and post priced separately if needed

Detail work

Arrows, fire lanes, numbers, crosswalks

Measured on site

  • Priced per item
  • Stencils and custom legends available

Striping done at the same visit as sealcoating costs less than striping done on its own, because the trip is already paid for and the surface is already right. If both are due, do both.

How the Work Goes in Rice Lake

Planned with you before the first stripe goes down.

Measure what's there

Stall widths, aisle widths, the accessible stalls and their aisles. This is where drift shows up, and it's a five-minute job that avoids repainting a layout that has quietly stopped working.

Clean the surface

Blown down. Paint over grit is paint that comes up with the grit, usually the first time a plow goes over it.

Lay out and chalk

Anything other than a straight restripe gets set out and chalked first, so you can look at it before it's permanent.

Paint

Traffic paint at the right film thickness. Thin paint looks the same on the day and is gone in a season, which is the striping equivalent of a thin seal.

Open it back up

Traffic paint is dry to walk on in under an hour. How long before cars go back on it depends on the paint and the weather that afternoon, so you get the real number that day.

Questions We Get in Rice Lake

What Rice Lake calls us about, answered straight.

More questions answered
How far up 53 will you come for a lot?
Rice Lake is about an hour north of Eau Claire on Highway 53, and for commercial lots we come up. Send the address and what the lot needs and we'll set up a time to walk it. The estimate is free.
Do you do the striping and the ADA stalls too, or just the sealing?
Both. The striping goes on after the sealer has cured, and ADA stalls and access aisles are laid out to the federal dimensions rather than eyeballed.
How much does it cost to restripe a parking lot?
It is priced per stall, and the thing that moves it most is whether the old lines can be followed. A straightforward restripe over a layout that is still visible is the cheap end. A new layout costs more per stall because it has to be measured and set out from scratch. ADA stalls cost more than standard ones: they are wider, they carry an access aisle and they need the symbol and the signage.
How often does a lot need restriping?
Every one to three years in Rice Lake and the surrounding area, depending on traffic, plowing and sun. Lots that get plowed hard lose lines fastest, because the blade takes the paint with the snow. If your accessible stalls are hard to read from a car, it's due.
Do you handle ADA compliance?
We mark accessible stalls, access aisles and symbols to the required dimensions and can advise on stall counts and signage. We're a paving contractor rather than a compliance consultant, so for a formal audit you want a specialist, but for getting the markings right we do this constantly.
Should we seal before striping?
Yes, and in that order, at the same visit. Sealer covers existing lines, so striping first wastes the paint. Doing both together also costs less than two separate visits.
Can you do stencils, numbers and custom legends?
Yes. Arrows, fire lane markings, no parking, loading zones, reserved stall numbers, crosswalks and custom text.
Do you stripe anything other than parking lots?
Yes. We stripe running tracks and sports courts, which is measured layout work at a different level of precision. It's on our athletic surfaces page.

The Lots and Surfaces in Rice Lake

Rice Lake is the largest city in Barron County, about 9,000 people an hour north of Eau Claire on Highway 53. The retail runs along South Main Street, from Cedar Mall down through the chain restaurant pads, with downtown Main Street the older spine. The industry sits in three named parks and one very large plant.

The biggest lots in town belong to Rice Lake Weighing Systems, the scale manufacturer with its headquarters, main plant and metrology lab here and more than 600 people on the payroll, and to Marshfield Medical Center on West Stout Street, a full hospital campus with inpatient and outpatient buildings. College Drive carries two campuses side by side: Northwood Technical College and UW-Eau Claire Barron County, about 110 acres with six buildings.

The parks are where the newer commercial surface is. Rice Lake Business Park is 167 acres on the north side with highway access and the streets and utilities already in, CedarSide Business Park is 44 acres next to Northwood Tech, and the North Industrial Park at Lindy Street and Schwers Avenue is where Allram Lumber just broke ground. Menards is on Decker Drive.

The state's geotechnical manual describes this corner of Wisconsin as silty glacial till with outwash sand and pockets of organic soil through it, so a lot can cross more than one kind of ground between its two ends.
