Working in La Crosse
Between two hospital systems, three college campuses and the airport, La Crosse has more lots with rules attached to them than anywhere else on this end of the road. ADA stalls and access aisles go in at the federal dimensions on the shortest accessible route to an entrance, fire lanes get marked, and loading zones, permit rows and drop-off lanes have to read on the first pass for a driver who's never been there. Layouts get measured and chalked before paint, and a restripe over a sealed lot waits for the sealer to cure.
Layout first, then paint
Repainting existing lines is the easy half. The half that matters is whether those lines were right in the first place, and on a lot that's been restriped three or four times by different crews, they usually have drifted. Stalls narrow by an inch each time somebody paints beside the old line rather than over it, drive aisles shrink, and eventually a delivery truck can't make the turn. We measure before we paint. Sometimes that means telling you the layout you have fits fewer cars than the layout you could have, which is a conversation worth having before the paint goes down rather than after.
What Decides the Price in La Crosse
Priced per stall for straightforward restripes, or as a lump sum where there's layout work, ADA work or a lot of detail.
Restripe, existing layout
Per stall
Measured on site
- Single line stalls, straight over the existing layout
- Priced per stall, restripe or new layout
New layout
Per stall, measured and set out
Measured on site
- Where the layout has drifted or the use has changed
ADA stall with access aisle
Each

- Stall, hatched access aisle and symbol
- Signage and post priced separately if needed
Detail work
Arrows, fire lanes, numbers, crosswalks
Measured on site
- Priced per item
- Stencils and custom legends available
Striping done at the same visit as sealcoating costs less than striping done on its own, because the trip is already paid for and the surface is already right. If both are due, do both.
How the Work Goes in La Crosse
Planned with you before the first stripe goes down.
Measure what's there
Stall widths, aisle widths, the accessible stalls and their aisles. This is where drift shows up, and it's a five-minute job that avoids repainting a layout that has quietly stopped working.
Clean the surface
Blown down. Paint over grit is paint that comes up with the grit, usually the first time a plow goes over it.
Lay out and chalk
Anything other than a straight restripe gets set out and chalked first, so you can look at it before it's permanent.
Paint
Traffic paint at the right film thickness. Thin paint looks the same on the day and is gone in a season, which is the striping equivalent of a thin seal.
Open it back up
Traffic paint is dry to walk on in under an hour. How long before cars go back on it depends on the paint and the weather that afternoon, so you get the real number that day.

The Lots and Surfaces in La Crosse
La Crosse is the seat of La Crosse County and the biggest city on this end of the road, about 51,000 people on the Mississippi where the bluffs come down to the river. It's roughly 87 miles from Eau Claire, right around two hours, off Exit 3 or Exit 2 on I-90. US 14, 53 and 61 and Highways 16, 33 and 35 all run through, and the regional airport sits on French Island at the north end of the city.
Health care and distribution hold the biggest lots. Gundersen Health System is on South Avenue with 325 beds and a 500,000 square foot critical care building, and Mayo Clinic Health System is on West Avenue South with a new six-level, 96-bed hospital and its center for advanced medicine. Kwik Trip's distribution center on Kwik Trip Way runs more than 360,000 square feet on a campus of about 90 acres, has been expanded five times since 1996, works around the clock and moves 33,000 pallets a day out to more than 566 stores. Trane was founded here in 1913.
The industrial ground is out at the interstate. Airport Industrial Park sits next to La Crosse Regional Airport at Exit 2, 21 filled lots over roughly 95 acres with warehouse and manufacturing users around it, and La Crosse International Business Park is north of I-90 off Highway 16 with five lots left between 1.15 and 3.4 acres. On the institutional side there are two public high schools, Central on Losey Boulevard South and Logan on Ranger Drive, plus UW-La Crosse on 128 acres, Viterbo on about 21, and Western Technical College's main campus on 7th Street North with four more buildings in the city. The city is promoting the River Point District, a mixed-use redevelopment on the waterfront.

La Crosse is the biggest city sitting entirely inside the Driftless Area. The ice never got here, so there's no glacial drift, the bluffs run up close to 600 feet, bedrock is at or near the surface, and the valley walls are colluvium.
