What Pitch Black Is

Pitch Black asphalt emulsion sealcoat

Pitch Black is a commercial-grade asphalt emulsion: asphalt sealing asphalt, so it bonds to the surface it's protecting and dries a deep, even black instead of fading gray. We mix sand and additives into it for traction, and it goes down over cracks that have already been filled hot at 400 degrees, because the sealer is the top layer of the job, not the whole job.

Eleven companies in Wisconsin and Minnesota are listed as distributors of this product. As of August 2026, ours is the only website among them that names it. One of the others is here in the Eau Claire market and describes the same sealer only as a commercial-grade product. We think you should be able to look up what a contractor is spraying at your house, so here it is, by name.
